Info: Come celebrate "100 Years of Pride, Progress and Preservation" as the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Alabama Black Heritage Council, the Alabama Historical Commission, the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation, and Tuskegee University, host a national conference on the founding of Rosenwald Schools. The program, developed by Booker T. Washington and supported by Julius Rosenwald, resulted in the construction of more than 5,000 buildings in 15 states between 1912-1932. At one time, Alabama had 389 schools along with some shop buildings and teacher homes. To date, only about two dozen of these buildings or their former sites have been located. The first official school to be built under the program was completed in 1912 in Loachapoaka, Lee County, AL.
