Info: The Center for the Study of the Black Belt in the Division of Educational Outreach at the University of Alabama, in conjunction wiht National Service Day, will host a Disaster Preparedness Workshop on Monday, Jan. 16, in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. The event will be held at the University of West Alabama Alfa Center in Livingston from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The community is invited to attend this free event.
In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service, calling Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national, state and local problems.
Local and state representatives in their respected fields, such as the fire department, law enforcement (police, sheriff), medical, legal, education, city management, insurance and banking industry are among the participants that will share emergency preparedness as it impacts to the community.
According to Janice Greenwood, UWA’s DEO Service Coordinator, the idea for the 2012 MLK Day of Service event came as a result of “the tornadoes Southwest Alabama experienced in 2011.”
“We think it will benefit the entire community to have expert advice on how and what to do to prepare for a disaster,” explained Greenwood. “We’re very excited to have Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox share with us the lessons learned by his community after the devasation of the April 27 tornado in Tuscaloosa.”
Although the event is free, registration is required for those wishing to attend.
