Info: Dr. Mark Hersey of Mississippi State University inaugurates the Holland Lectures with a presentation on famed scientist and educator George Washington Carver on Tuesday, Feb. 21. A 5:30 p.m. reception precedes the 6:15 p.m. lecture presentation at the Bell Conference Center in Livingston. Copies of Hersey’s book will be available for purchase on site. The event is open to the public.

The Holland Lectures—so named in honor of University of West Alabama President Richard Holland—will showcase early-career scholars working in the burgeoning field of natural and environmental history. “We are excited to be at the forefront of this growing field of research,” said Valerie Burnes, Director of the Center for the Study of the Black Belt, “The development of the Holland lecture series will bring scholars from around the country to UWA. It is a great opportunity for us.”

History Department Chair Dr. R. Volney Riser said, “When we decided to offer this series, we decided they should stand as a tribute to Dr. Holland’s commitment to the historical community and to the preservation and study of the Black Belt’s rich natural history. “We are excited to be able to bring this series to the university,” Riser continued, “and we are so very pleased Dr. Holland has entrusted his good name to us.”

This event should be both celebratory and educational, Riser said, adding that, “we hope that all of Dr. Holland’s friends, neighbors and colleagues will join us in commemorating the academic legacy he’s building here at the University.”
