July 19 – 20 and July 24 – 25 at the Rural Heritage Center in Thomaston. On Thursday, July 19th,
well known sculptor and artist, Mr. Charlie Lucas from Selma, will be on hand to conduct an art
workshop with youth ages 7 – 12 from 9 AM to 11AM at the Center. Mr. Lucas is known as the
“Tin Man” because his sculptures are mostly made of tin. Mr. Lucas’ work has been featured in
newspaper and magazine articles, and a book has been written about him and his work with art
and sculptures. This two day workshop will continue the next day, Friday, July 20th at the same
location and time and will include interactive art projects for youth ages 7 – 12.
The following week on Tuesday, July 24th, youth will have the
opportunity to experience a wildlife component
where they will learn about wildlife in our area by examining the
skins and skulls of animals around our state. Outdoor activities will
include Frisbee and volley ball games from the “Just
Move, Alabama” curriculum and making sun safety bead bracelets.
The outdoor fun begins at 9AM and ends at 11AM at the Rural Heritage Center in Thomaston for
youth ages 7 – 12.
More outdoor fun is scheduled for Wednesday, July 25th, when Mr. Dave Armstrong from the
Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries will conduct a day camp on baiting, casting,
and fishing. Rods and bait will be furnished for this fun activity from 9 AM to 11AM for ages
7 to 12.
Snacks will be served at each of the day camps, and there will be a charge
of $10 to participate in all four day camps (which is $2.50 per day camp) to
help pay for supplies. Conducting the workshops will be Mrs. Kathryn Friday,
County Coordinator, Mrs. Beth Wideman, 4-H Agent Assistant, and Mrs. Susan
Thompson, 4-H Regional Extension Agent. Please call the Marengo County
Extension office to sign up for these fun summer day camps. 334-295-5959.
