Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) licensure course offered on campus by UWA this spring

The University of West Alabama will offer three Basic Emergency Medical Technician courses this spring that, when taken together, meet or exceed the U.S. Department of Transportation National EMS Education Standards for the Basic Emergency Medical Technician and meet the requirements necessary to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) EMT Examination. Alabama requires completion of the NREMT testing process for licensure for EMT. Classes will begin on January 13, 2014 and will end on May 7, 2014. Course descriptions and specific meeting times/dates are listed below. Successful completion of the courses, whether non-credit or for credit provides examination and licensure eligibility.
Non-Credit Students
The courses are offered to the public for non-credit. Non-credit tuition for the entire program is $700, payable at the first class meeting, and does not include the cost of textbooks. EMS 200 Basic Emergency Care (6)
Includes all required modules of the 1994 EMT Basic National Standard Curriculum Patient assessment, airway management, hemorrhage control, management of fractures, care of special injuries, emergency childbirth, environmental emergencies, transportation of the sick and injured, and radio communications. Prerequisite: AHA BLS for Health Care Providers. Corequisite: EMS 205 & EMS 206.
Class meeting times are 6:00 -10:00 P.M. Monday & Wednesday January 13 through May 7

EMS 205 Basic Emergency Clinical Internship (1)
Pre-hospital care and transportation of the sick and injured using principles of basic life support, correlated with emergency room experience. Time distributed between emergency room, ambulance, communications center, and interfaculty transport vehicle.

EMS 206 Basic Skills Laboratory (1) TBA
Basic Emergency Medical Technician Skill practicum. Designed to allow Basic EMT students extensive practice of required psychomotor skills.
