Advanced EMT licensure courses offered by UWA this spring at Demopolis Higher Education Center
The University of West Alabama will offer four Advanced Emergency Medical Technician courses this spring that, when taken together, meet or exceed the U.S. Department of Transportation National EMS Education Standards for the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and meet the requirements necessary to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) AEMT Examination. Alabama requires completion of the NREMT testing process for licensure for AEMT. Classes will begin on January 13, 2014 and will end on May 8, 2014. Course descriptions and specific meeting times/dates are listed below: Successful completion of the courses, whether non-credit or for credit provides examination and licensure eligibility.
Non-Credit Students
The courses are offered to the public for non-credit. Non-credit tuition for the entire program is $800 payable at the first class meeting, and does not include the cost of textbooks. EMS 300 - Advanced Concepts for the AEMT (3)
This course serves as the introductory course to the advanced level practice of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). It expands on the information attained at the EMT level. Topics include: EMS Systems; Documentation; EMS System Communication; Therapeutic Communication; Principles of Pharmacology; Medication Administration; Emergency Medications; Airway Management; Respiration; Artificial Ventilation; Primary Assessment; and Secondary Assessment. Prerequisite: Licensure or eligibility for licensure at the EMT level.
Class meeting times are 6:00 -10:00 P.M. Monday, Tuesday & Thursday January 13 through May 8
EMS 301 - Advanced Patient Care for the AEMT (3)
This course provides opportunities to apply fundamental knowledge of basic and selected advanced emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for the following: an acutely ill patient; a patient in shock, respiratory failure or arrest, cardiac failure or arrest, and post resuscitation management; and an acutely injured patient. In addition it provides a fundamental knowledge of growth, development, and aging and assessment findings to provide basic and selected advanced emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs. Topics include: Geriatrics; Patients with Special Challenges; Medical Overview; Neurology; Immunology; Infectious Disease; Endocrine Disorders; Cardiovascular; Toxicology; Respiratory; Hematology; Genitourinary/Renal; Shock and Resuscitation; Chest Trauma; Abdominal and Genitourinary Trauma; Orthopedic Trauma; Head, Facial, Neck, and Spine Trauma: Nervous System Trauma; and Integration of Medical/Trauma Assessments. Prerequisite: Licensure at the EMT level. Prerequisite or co-requisite: EMS 300.

EMS 302 - Clinical Applications for the AEMT (1)
This course provides supervised clinical experience in various clinical settings. Topics include: Clinicals. Prerequisite: Licensure at the EMT level. Co-requisite: EMS 301.

EMS 303 - Clinical and Practice Applications for the AEMT (3)
This course provides supervised clinical experience in various clinical settings as well as opportunities to demonstrate critical thinking skills and assessment based management techniques through competency based evaluations relevant to the practice of an AEMT. Topics include: Clinicals and Assessment Based Management. Prerequisite: Licensure at the EMT level. Co-requisite: EMS 301.
